Character background and universe (Lore)

James MacDonald Hudson is a Canadian engineer and one of the founders of Alpha Flight, the superhero team tasked with protecting Canada in the Marvel Universe.

Hudson originally developed an exoskeleton intended for geological exploration. When he discovered that the company employing him wished to divert this technology for military purposes, he left the firm, taking with him the essential components needed to control his invention.

The Canadian government subsequently allowed him to continue his research within Department H, an organisation specialising in activities relating to superhuman individuals. Hudson thus helped to create the team that would become Alpha Flight.

James Hudson used several names throughout his career. He first appeared under the identity of Weapon Alpha, then went by the name Vindicator before finally adopting the name Guardian. The name Vindicator was later also used by his wife, Heather Hudson, when she took over his equipment and the leadership of Alpha Flight.

His high-tech suit is the source of most of his abilities. In particular, the equipment enables him to fly at very high speeds, to manipulate and project various forms of electromagnetic energy, and to generate defensive force fields.

Alpha Flight has a long-standing relationship with the X-Men, and particularly with Wolverine. Logan had in fact been recruited by Department H before leaving Canada to join Charles Xavier’s team. Alpha Flight initially attempted to bring him back to Canada before the two groups gradually became allies.

Hasbro is marketing this version under the name ‘Marvel’s Vindicator’ and linking it to ‘X-Men ’97’. The red and white costume directly reflects the character’s Canadian identity, with a prominent maple leaf incorporated into the design.

This Marvel Legends Series figure thus allows fans to showcase one of the founding characters of the Alpha Flight universe whilst incorporating him into the collection dedicated to X-Men ’97.
