Origin and background of the scene (Lore)

The Ozdust Ballroom plays an important role in *Wicked*. Whilst studying at Shiz University, Elphaba and Galinda – the future Glinda – still have a strained relationship. Fiyero takes several students to a party at the Ozdust, which Elphaba eventually attends as well.

Elphaba arrives wearing the black hat that Galinda had given her as a cruel joke. When the other students start mocking her, Elphaba chooses to dance alone anyway. Realising the significance of her actions and feeling remorse, Galinda finally joins Elphaba on the dance floor and mimics her movements. This silent moment marks a turning point in their relationship: the two young women then begin to overcome their mutual prejudices and become true friends.

In the 2024 film adaptation directed by Jon M. Chu, the Ozdust is reimagined as a nightclub deep within Oz, featuring musicians from the Animal Kingdom. The sequence forms an important part of the ‘Dancing Through Life’ number and particularly highlights the relationship between Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, and Glinda, played by Ariana Grande.

POP! Mini Moment No. 2174 specifically chooses to capture this pivotal scene in a small diorama, bringing Elphaba and Glinda together just as their rivalry begins to give way to friendship.
