Origin and background of the character
The character of The Count (known as Comte von Compte in the French version) hails from the famous American educational television programme Sesame Street, created by Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrisett in 1969. The story is set in a vibrant and welcoming urban neighbourhood, where humans live alongside puppets (the Muppets) created by Jim Henson to explore concepts of learning and living together. The Count is a friendly, purple-skinned vampire who lives in an old Gothic-style castle and suffers from a cheerful, obsessive compulsion to count. He cannot help but count absolutely everything around him (bricks, bats, candles) and invariably punctuates his successful calculations with a thunderous, theatrical laugh accompanied by a mystical clap of thunder. This figurine draws direct inspiration from his timeless design to celebrate the art of introducing children to mathematics through humour. Its sleek graphic style highlights the character’s Gothic elegance and originality, ready to add a scholarly and nostalgic touch to collectors’ shelves.
