Origin and world of the character
Created by writer Warren Ellis and artist Bryan Hitch, Midnighter first appeared in 1998 in the comic book Stormwatch (vol. 2) #4, published by WildStorm before the catalogue was bought out and integrated by DC Comics. The character's physical abilities have been enhanced by bioengineered implants, giving him a tactical brain computer capable of instantly calculating and predicting the thousands of scenarios in a battle before it even begins. A central figure in the vigilante team "The Authority", Midnighter is also one of the first openly gay superheroes in major comics, forming a historic duo with his team-mate Apollo.
