Origin and world of the character
Kai Azer is one of the main protagonists of the Powerless trilogy of fantasy novels, a veritable phenomenon of Young Adult literature written by author Lauren Roberts. The story takes place in the kingdom of Ilya, where some of the population - the Elite - possess supernatural abilities born of a past plague, while ordinary people without powers, called the Ordinary, are persecuted and banished. Kai Azer is the crown prince and official Enforcer of the kingdom, a fearsome fighter tasked by his father with ruthlessly hunting down rebels and the powerless. His path changes when he meets Paedyn Gray, a particularly skilled Ordinary who manages to pass herself off as an Elite during the Purge Trials, rigorous and deadly martial tests organised by the crown. The story explores their complex psychological, political and romantic duel.
