Character background and lore

Red-Haired Shanks is one of the most influential pirates in the One Piece universe. Captain of the Red-Haired Pirates, he once sailed as a ship’s boy aboard the ship of Gol D. Roger, the legendary Pirate King, alongside Baggy.

Shanks plays a pivotal role in Monkey D. Luffy’s story. When they met in Fuchsia Village, he became one of the young boy’s main sources of inspiration. After saving Luffy from a sea monster at the cost of his left arm, Shanks entrusted him with his famous straw hat, asking him to return it once he had become a great pirate.

Having subsequently become one of the Four Emperors, Shanks wields considerable influence across the seas despite having a relatively small crew. He is particularly renowned for his exceptional mastery of Haki and for the natural authority he commands over both his allies and his adversaries. His role in the events that shape the balance of power in the One Piece world makes him one of the series’ most important and mysterious characters.
