Character background and lore

Sanji, nicknamed ‘Black Leg Sanji’, is the cook of the Straw Hat Pirates. A former sous-chef at the floating restaurant Baratie, he joined Monkey D. Luffy to pursue his dream: to discover All Blue, a legendary sea where fish from all the world’s oceans are said to gather. The official One Piece profile describes him as both an exceptional chef and a fighter skilled in leg techniques.

Sanji generally refuses to use his hands in combat so as to preserve them for cooking. He therefore favours powerful kicking techniques, inherited in particular from the training he received from Zeff. His development has enabled him to master techniques capable of setting his legs alight and considerably increasing their power.

The character is also famous for his behaviour towards women. Far from his usual elegant and composed demeanour, Sanji can become utterly euphoric when faced with a woman he finds attractive. The official One Piece website explicitly highlights this weakness, whilst also emphasising his deeply chivalrous nature and his refusal to strike a woman, even when she belongs to the opposing side.

POP! No. 2566 draws precisely on this recurring source of humour: rather than depicting Sanji in the thick of battle, Funko has opted here for his utterly smitten expression, with heart-shaped eyes and a deliberately exaggerated demeanour that captures one of the character’s funniest traits.
