Character background and universe (Lore)

Monkey D. Luffy is the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates and the main protagonist of One Piece. His goal is to sail the Grand Line, discover the legendary treasure left by Gol D. Roger and become the Pirate King.

Gear 5 represents the ultimate awakening of his powers. This transformation occurs during his battle against Kaido on Onigashima and reveals the true nature of his Devil Fruit: the Hito Hito no Mi, Model Nika, a mythical Zoan Fruit associated with the legendary Sun God Nika.

In this form, Luffy enjoys extraordinary physical freedom. His body retains its elastic properties whilst being able to distort his surroundings—and even his opponents—in absurd ways, giving his battles a deliberately cartoon-like aesthetic.

Gear 5 thus fully embodies Luffy’s personality: freedom, creativity and a refusal to be constrained. This transformation has become one of the character’s most significant defining moments and marks a major turning point in the history of One Piece.
