Character background and lore

Captain John is a legendary pirate from the One Piece universe. Long before the events of the series, he was a member ofRocks’ crew, one of the most fearsome pirate crews of his time. In particular, he took part in the God Valley incident, a major event in the history of the One Piece world.

Following the disappearance of Rocks’ crew, John himself gained great renown as a pirate captain. He became particularly famous for amassing an immense fortune, to the point where his treasure and the mysterious hiding place in which he is said to have concealed it became legendary. This fortune is, in particular, obsessively sought after by Baggy the Clown.

Even after his death, Captain John continues to play a role in the story. His body ended up in the hands of Gecko Moria and Dr Hogback, who transformed him into one of the Zombie Generals of Thriller Bark. It is in this form that the character first appears in the series.

Between his membership of the legendary Rocks Pirates, the legend of his treasure and his reappearance on Thriller Bark, Captain John perfectly exemplifies the way in which One Piece links past events to the adventures of the current generation of pirates.
