Character background and lore
Gai Maito is a jōnin from the Hidden Village of Konoha and the leader of Team Gai, comprising Rock Lee, Neji Hyūga and Tenten. An extremely enthusiastic character, he places training, hard work and what he calls the ‘zeal of youth’ at the heart of his philosophy.
A specialist in taijutsu, Gaï compensates for his limited use of ninjutsu techniques with exceptional physical abilities. In particular, he has mastered the Eight Gates technique, which allows the user to gradually push beyond the body’s limits in order to significantly increase their speed and power, at the cost of increasingly serious physical risks.
Gai also has a long-standing, friendly rivalry with Kakashi Hatake, whom he regularly challenges to all manner of contests. This competition contrasts with the deep respect the two ninjas have for one another.
His influence is particularly significant for Rock Lee, whom he takes under his wing as a mentor. Like Gai, Lee specialises almost exclusively in hand-to-hand combat and adopts much of his master’s philosophy. During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Gai demonstrates the full extent of his abilities by opening as many as the eighth and final Gate during his clash with Madara Uchiha, making him one of the most formidable fighters of that era.
