Origin and background of the character (Lore)
Created by the Finnish illustrator Tove Jansson, Snufkin (known as Nomade in French) is the young Moomin’s best friend. A philosophical, free-spirited and deeply solitary character, he refuses to burden himself with unnecessary material possessions, preferring to travel the world with his old green hat and rucksack. Every winter, he leaves the valley to venture south whilst the Moomin family hibernates, and invariably returns on the first day of spring. A true lover of freedom and contemplation, Snufkin expresses his deepest emotions through the notes of his harmonica. His impromptu concerts by the fireside, by the riverbanks or at the edge of the forest capture the essence of serenity and harmony with nature that characterise the spirit of the work.
