Origin and character lore
Released in cinemas in 2001 by Pixar Studios, Monsters, Inc. is a universal masterpiece of animation. The story is set in Monstropolis, a city inhabited by monsters whose main source of energy comes from the screams of terror emitted by human children, collected by elite agents known as ‘Scare Agents’. Sulli, a huge monster with turquoise fur speckled with purple and sporting horns, is the number one Scare in the Monsters, Inc. factory. With the help of his loyal friend and flatmate Bob Razowski, his life is turned upside down when a little human girl, whom he nicknames Boo, accidentally stumbles into their world.
In monster culture, human children are considered extremely toxic and deadly upon the slightest physical contact. Terrified but determined to secretly protect her from the dreaded Decontamination Unit (the CDA), Sulli and Bob try to hide Boo whilst protecting themselves from potential infection. This figurine captures, with a great sense of nostalgia, the amusing sight of Sulli using a simple metal bin lid as a makeshift shield, symbolising the gradual shift from fear to the unwavering bond that unites the heroes throughout this cult adventure.
