Character background and universe (Lore)
Vision first appears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in *Avengers: Age of Ultron*. His synthetic body was originally designed by Ultron to serve as his new vessel, using advanced technology and vibranium.
However, the Avengers manage to recover the body before Ultron can transfer his consciousness into it. Tony Stark and Bruce Banner then integrate J.A.R.V.I.S., the artificial intelligence that had previously assisted Iron Man, whilst Thor intervenes at the moment of its activation.
The Mind Stone, previously housed within Loki’s sceptre, is embedded in his forehead and plays a direct part in Vision’s creation. The resulting new being is neither merely a machine nor truly human: he develops his own personality and judgement, and chooses to oppose Ultron.
Shortly after his awakening, however, the Avengers remain wary of his intentions. Vision then surprises the group by effortlessly lifting Mjolnir before handing the hammer back to Thor. This gesture is one of the most memorable moments in *Avengers: Age of Ultron* and plays a decisive role in the heroes’ trust in him.
In the MCU, the enchantment associated with Mjolnir normally prevents anyone deemed unworthy from lifting it. The ease with which Vision handles the hammer therefore immediately fuels discussions about his nature and his ability to be considered ‘worthy’.
Vision then joins the Avengers during the Battle of Sokovia and takes part in the final confrontation against Ultron. He subsequently becomes a key member of the team and develops a close relationship with Wanda Maximoff.
This Marvel POP! No. 1664 captures precisely the moment when Vision holds Mjolnir, symbolising his arrival amongst the Avengers and the trust the heroes are beginning to place in him.
