The History and Lore of the Object
In the world of *The Apothecary’s Notebooks*, Jinshi holds the prestigious and strategic position of chief eunuch and steward of the Imperial Inner Court. Endowed with an almost unreal, celestial beauty that captivates virtually all the maids and concubines, he conceals beneath his angelic smile a mind of formidable acuity and weighty political secrets. Intrigued by Maomao, a young apothecary with an extraordinary gift for deduction and a complete indifference towards him, he enlists her to solve the mysteries and thwart attempts at poisoning within the palace. This statuette captures the relaxed, observant and regal demeanour of this key figure in the plot, standing as the young woman’s protector and secret admirer.
