The Iron Giant is the central character in the American animated film *The Iron Giant*, directed by Brad Bird and released in 1999. Produced by Warner Bros., the film is based on the book *The Iron Man* by the British writer Ted Hughes, published in 1968.
The story is set in Maine in 1957, at the height of the Cold War. Young Hogarth Hughes discovers a gigantic robot from outer space in the woods. Despite his imposing appearance and considerable strength, the Giant initially behaves like an innocent being who is unaware of his true nature. Hogarth quickly befriends him and tries to hide him when rumours of a huge robot’s presence attract the attention of the authorities.
Through his time with Hogarth, the Giant gradually learns the difference between violence and personal choice. The discovery of his offensive capabilities reveals that he may have been designed as a weapon of destruction, but his friendship with the boy leads him to reject this fate. This conflict between what he was created for and what he chooses to become is one of the film’s central themes.
Superman therefore plays an important symbolic role in his development. Hogarth introduces the Giant to the superhero as an example of an extremely powerful being who nevertheless chooses to use his strength to protect others. The ‘S’ on the Funko figurine’s chest directly references this identification of the Giant with Superman and the heroic choice that defines his journey.
The POP! VHS Covers No. 25 thus links the character to a deliberately retro design, consistent with the 1950s science-fiction setting in which the film is set, whilst highlighting one of its most recognisable narrative symbols.
