Character background and lore

Peter Pettigrew is one of the four Marauders, alongside James Potter, Sirius Black and Remus Lupin. All four belong to Gryffindor House during their time at Hogwarts and become close friends. Peter is given the nickname Wormtail, a reference to his Animagus ability to transform into a rat.

James, Sirius and Peter secretly learnt to become undeclared Animagi so that they could accompany Remus Lupin during his transformations into a werewolf. In their animal forms, the four friends explore the castle and the area around Hogwarts in great detail, which contributes to the creation of their most famous magical artefact: the Marauder’s Map.

This enchanted map shows the layout of Hogwarts and allows the user to track the movements of anyone in the castle. It utilises, in particular, the Homunculus Charm and is not fooled by an Invisibility Cloak, Polyjuice Potion or an Animagus transformation. Its four creators are identified on the map by their nicknames: Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs.

Peter Pettigrew’s path then takes a very different turn from that of his former friends. Having become Lord Voldemort’s informant, he betrays James and Lily Potter by revealing their whereabouts whilst acting as their Secret-Keeper. He then concealed his true identity for years in his rat form before reappearing in the events of *Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban*.

This POP! Movies No. 225, however, chooses to revisit the period when Peter was still part of the Marauders, linking him directly to the Marauder’s Map and his identity as Wormtail.
