Origin and world of the character
The character of Shooter McGavin is the main antagonist of the cult sports comedy Happy Gilmore, directed by Dennis Dugan and released in 1996 . Starring Adam Sandler, the film follows a hot-tempered ice hockey player who turns to golf to earn a large financial bonus. Played brilliantly by actor Christopher McDonald, Shooter McGavin is an extremely talented but deeply arrogant, egotistical and condescending top professional golfer. Obsessed with winning the famous 'gold jacket' for the Pro Golf Tour tournament, he takes a dim view of the arrival of Happy Gilmore, whose unconventional style and growing popularity threaten his hegemony. Willing to use any trick or manipulation to destabilise his rival, Shooter McGavin has become one of the most memorable, funny and iconic villains of 90s comedy.
