Character background and lore

Kōshi Sugawara is a third-year pupil at Karasuno High School and the vice-captain of its boys’ volleyball team. An experienced setter, he was initially the first-choice setter before the arrival of Tobio Kageyama. Despite the competition posed by the young player’s exceptional abilities, Sugawara accepts his new role without resentment and remains deeply committed to the team.

His understanding of the game, his experience and his ability to read opponents make him a valuable asset to Karasuno. Even when he is on the bench, he advises his teammates and helps to keep them motivated. When he takes to the court, his passing style—which differs from Kageyama’s—also helps to change the pace of a match and catch the opposing team off guard. This combination of calmness, kindness and determination makes Sugawara one of Karasuno’s key players.
