Character background and universe (Lore)

The D.I.R.E. Hawk is not a new version of the character Clayton ‘Hawk’ Abernathy: it is a type of Cobra paratrooper, introduced into the Classified Series universe in 2026. The D.I.R.E. Hawks bolster Cobra’s specialist forces and are designed to deploy from the air using technology that combines military equipment with supernatural energy.

The acronym D.I.R.E. stands for Dread-Inducing Responsive Energy. This technology harnesses mystical energies to power the Jet Wing Packs used by these soldiers. The ectoplasmic wings produced by the device enable them to perform extremely rapid descents and dive attacks, provided their mental focus is strong enough to maintain the integrity of the energy wings.

In the G.I. Joe universe, Cobra is a militarised criminal organisation seeking to expand its power on a global scale, whilst the G.I. Joe team is an international special forces unit tasked with combating it. With the D.I.R.E. Hawks, Cobra adds a new aerial unit to its arsenal, combining mobility, weaponry and experimental energy technology, thereby opening up a new branch of the contemporary lore of the Classified Series.
