Origin and background of the character
Created by Joss Whedon in 2002, Firefly is a cult space western series which, despite its short-lived run on television, has left a lasting mark on the history of science fiction. The plot follows the motley crew of the Serenity, a Firefly-class ship travelling on the fringes of the Interstellar Alliance, making a living from smuggling and odd jobs. Derrial Book, commonly known as Shepherd Book, comes aboard as a religious passenger (a ‘Shepherd’ or pastor) seeking to spread the good word throughout the galaxy. However, behind his apparent devotion, biblical wisdom and kindness lies a murky, highly strategic past, illustrated by his surgical knowledge of firearms, military combat tactics and his secret priority access to the Alliance network. This Funko Pop! figurine perfectly captures the big-hearted preacher, whilst its rare ‘Chase’ variant is a must-have for fans of this unique space-faring universe.
