FINDING NEMO - POP Sayings N° 1816 - Bruce

Finding Nemo — POP! Sayings No. 1816 Bruce ‘Fish Are Friends, Not Food’

Relive one of the most memorable scenes from the Pixar film Finding Nemo with this POP! Sayings No. 1816 figurine dedicated to Bruce. Designed by Funko, this edition features the great white shark alongside a speech bubble bearing his famous motto: ‘Fish are friends, not food’.

Bruce is depicted with his imposing grey silhouette, white belly and broad, rounded snout. His fins are spread out on either side of his body, whilst his slightly parted mouth reveals several rows of teeth. Despite this impressive set of teeth, his gaze and expression retain the friendly demeanour that this version of the character is all about.

The figurine rests on a base evoking the marine environment. Above the shark, the speech bubble transforms the whole into a small narrative scene and immediately highlights the main rule of the support group created by Bruce, Chumy and the Anvil.

This edition is part of the POP! Sayings range, in which the characters are accompanied by a quote directly linked to their backstory. Here, the text forms a central element of the composition: it recalls Bruce’s efforts to resist his predatory instincts and live peacefully alongside the ocean’s other inhabitants.

Character background and lore

Bruce is a great white shark whom Marlin and Dory meet during their journey to Sydney. Despite his imposing appearance and natural reputation as a predator, he actively seeks to behave peacefully towards other fish.

Together with his companions Chumy, a hammerhead shark, and Anvil, a mako shark, Bruce organises meetings in the wreck of a submarine. These gatherings function as a support group during which the three sharks try to control their feeding instincts.

Their motto is repeated like a collective promise: fish must be regarded as friends, not as food. Bruce therefore welcomes Marin and Dory enthusiastically and invites them to join the meeting, despite the clownfish’s understandable wariness.

The situation takes a dramatic turn when a drop of Dory’s blood lands on Bruce. The scent immediately reawakens his hunting instinct and drives him to chase the two fish through the submarine. This scene creates a comical contrast between his sincere good intentions and the power of his natural reflexes.

Bruce is not, however, a true antagonist. He is portrayed as a sociable and kind-hearted character who is struggling with a part of himself that is difficult to control. His motto has thus become one of the film’s most famous lines and sums up the humorous tone of this encounter.

This POP! Sayings figure highlights precisely this contradiction. The imposing shark and his sharp teeth are paired with a peaceful message, transforming Bruce into a figure that is at once amusing, expressive and instantly recognisable within a Pixar collection.
