The Ichibansho collection from Banpresto / Bandai Spirits traces the evolution of Son Goku with the series The Chronicle of Goku, including this imposing figurine dedicated to his transformation into the Great Ape (Oozaru). Part of the SOFVICS range, which specialises in large-scale sculptures, it stands approximately 26 cm tall and captures one of the most spectacular forms of the Dragon Ball hero.
Son Goku is depicted as a gigantic ape with dark brown fur, standing on his two legs with his arms raised and his fists clenched tightly. His wide-open mouth reveals imposing fangs, whilst his red eyes, prominent snout and pointed ears emphasise the ferocious appearance of the transformation. The substantial proportions of the torso, shoulders and limbs give the sculpture a sense of raw power.
The long monkey’s tail extends behind the figure, an essential element of this transformation within the Dragon Ball universe. The textured finish on the fur contrasts with the smoother surfaces of the face, hands and feet. With a size significantly larger than a classic Ichibansho figurine, this SOFVICS version is designed as a centrepiece for a collection dedicated to Son Goku and the various stages of his evolution.

Son Goku’s transformation into a Great Ape, or Oozaru, occurs very early on in Dragon Ball. Whilst Goku, Bulma and their companions are imprisoned in Pilaf’s castle, the young hero catches sight of the full moon through the ceiling of his cell. He then transforms into a giant ape and destroys much of the castle in a violent fit of rage. To stop him, Puar transforms into a giant pair of scissors and cuts off his tail, causing him to return to his normal form.
At this stage in the story, Goku is still completely unaware of the origin of this ability. The series later reveals that he is in fact a Saiyan, an alien race whose members, who have tails, can transform into a Great Ape when exposed to the full moon or an equivalent source of Blutz waves.
The transformation greatly increases Goku’s size and physical strength, but the young Saiyan is initially unable to maintain control of it. This form reappears notably during the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai, forcing Jackie Chun to intervene to prevent the giant ape from continuing his rampage.
This ‘The Chronicle of Goku’ figurine thus references one of the very first manifestations of Goku’s true origins, long before the character himself or his companions discovered his Saiyan heritage. Its particularly imposing SOFVICS scale naturally emphasises the contrast between the young Goku from the early days of the series and the immense power of his transformation into Oozaru.
