Origin and character background (Lore)

Monokuma is the iconic mascot of Danganronpa and one of the franchise’s central figures. Beneath his black-and-white bear appearance lies a sadistic and manipulative character, tasked with enforcing the rules of the murder games the students are forced to play.

In Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and subsequently Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, Monokuma drives the participants to kill one another by promising them freedom on condition that they commit a murder without being discovered during the class trial.

His two-tone appearance directly symbolises the duality between innocence and cruelty that characterises his role in the series. This cushion features precisely this now-iconic face, with its contrast between a smiling expression and a constant threat.
