Character origin and lore

The Forgotten is a secret character from The Binding of Isaac, added with Booster Pack #5 of Afterbirth+. His skeletal appearance and gameplay set him apart significantly from the other playable characters in the series.

Unlike Isaac and most other characters, The Forgotten does not directly fire tears. He fights primarily with a large bone that can be used as a melee weapon or charged up before being thrown at enemies.

The character is inseparable from The Soul, a blue ghost linked to The Forgotten. The player can switch between the two forms: The Forgotten specialises in physical attacks with his bone, whilst The Soul can fly and shoot spectral tears from a distance. However, both forms share a single health bar, and the game ends if either of them dies.

The Forgotten also uses a unique system of Bone Hearts rather than traditional heart containers. Soul Hearts and Black Hearts, meanwhile, are assigned to The Soul, further reinforcing the complementary nature of the two forms.
