With Bayern Munich, he won three consecutive German league titles in 1999, 2000 and 2001, as well as the German Cup in 2000. His greatest success came in 2001 when Bayern won the Champions League against Valencia CF.
In that final, played in Milan, Effenberg scored Bayern’s equaliser from the penalty spot before also converting his spot-kick in the decisive shoot-out. As captain, he then lifted the Champions League trophy, bringing the club’s first European title in 25 years.
Known for his strong personality, his influence in midfield and his leadership qualities, Effenberg was nicknamed ‘Cheffe’, meaning ‘the boss’. He made 160 competitive appearances and scored 35 goals for Bayern Munich and is still regarded today as one of the club’s legends.
