From the BAKI series, this Banpresto figurine depicts Baki Hanma, the protagonist of the fighting saga created by Keisuke Itagaki. This item is Figure 2/2 of a two-part set dedicated to the clash between Baki and his father, Yujiro Hanma. Baki stands approximately 9 cm tall here; his reduced height is due to his kneeling position.
Baki is depicted bare-chested and kneeling in the seiza position, with his hands resting on his thighs. He wears dark blue trousers, whilst his particularly muscular physique is marked by numerous scars sculpted onto his chest, arms and back. His tousled reddish-brown hair and calm expression contrast with the physical power emphasised by the sculpture.
Baki Hanma is the protagonist of the Baki franchise, created by Keisuke Itagaki. A prodigious fighter, he becomes the young champion of the underground arena and faces numerous battles against some of the world’s most formidable opponents. The anime’s official website highlights, in particular, his fights against death-row inmates, kung fu masters and Pickle, which enable him to constantly develop his abilities.
Much of Baki’s journey, however, is driven by a personal goal: to surpass his father, Yujiro Hanma, nicknamed ‘the strongest creature in the world’. Their relationship lies at the heart of the saga and ultimately leads to the epic father-son battle, a clash during which Baki manages to secure a form of recognition of his strength from Yujiro.
This figurine deliberately takes a different approach to depictions of Baki in the heat of battle. His kneeling position facing Yujiro and the small table placed between the two characters emphasise their father-son relationship and their psychological confrontation, whilst retaining the musculature and numerous scars that bear witness to Baki’s journey as a fighter.
