Doctor Doom, whose real name is Victor von Doom, is one of the most iconic villains in the Marvel universe and, historically, the arch-enemy of the Fantastic Four. Originally from Latveria, Victor is a scientist of exceptional genius whose career is also closely linked to the mystical arts. His studies in the United States led him, in particular, to meet Reed Richards, with whom he developed a long-standing rivalry.
Following the failure of an experiment designed to breach dimensional barriers, Victor left the United States and continued his studies. He eventually adopted a metal suit of armour and an iron mask, then returned to Latveria, where he overthrew the ruling regime and became the country’s sovereign. His armour incorporates numerous offensive and defensive technologies, whilst his scientific, robotic and magical knowledge make him a threat capable of taking on the Fantastic Four, the Avengers and many other figures from the Marvel Universe.
His ambition, intelligence and immense ego are all fundamental characteristics of the character. Doom regularly seeks to prove his superiority over Reed Richards and to impose his own conception of order upon the world, whilst frequently regarding his actions as necessary or legitimate. This combination of monarch, scientist, inventor and sorcerer has enabled him to become one of Marvel’s most enduring antagonists since his first appearance in *Fantastic Four* #5 in 1962.
This POP! figure No. 1636 specifically depicts the version of Doctor Doom featured in *Avengers: Doomsday*; the biographical details above, however, describe the character’s classic origin as portrayed in the Marvel comics.
