Character background and lore

Elena Gilbert is one of the main characters in The Vampire Diaries. At the start of the series, this teenager from Mystic Falls is trying to get back to a normal life following the death of her parents. She then meets Stefan Salvatore, with whom she quickly develops a relationship, before discovering that Stefan is a vampire. Her brother Damon Salvatore subsequently enters her life and gradually becomes another key figure in her story.

Played by Nina Dobrev, Elena holds a special place in the series’ mythology due to her resemblance to Katherine Pierce, a vampire known to the Salvatore brothers since the 19th century. This connection gradually reveals that Elena belongs to a lineage of doppelgängers, a fact that places her at the centre of numerous supernatural conflicts.

Her journey brings her into conflict with vampires, witches, werewolves and members of the Original family in turn. Having started the story as a human, Elena eventually becomes a vampire herself, upending her perception of the supernatural world and her relationships with Stefan and Damon.

The Chase variant of this POP! No. 1976 directly references this evolution of the character. Whilst the standard version depicts Elena in her usual form, the Chase variant emphasises her vampiric side with a more menacing and bloodthirsty expression, thus offering two distinct representations of the different facets of her journey in *The Vampire Diaries*.
