Character background and lore

Damon Salvatore is one of the main characters in The Vampire Diaries. Portrayed by Ian Somerhalder, he is the brother of Stefan Salvatore, played by Paul Wesley. The two vampire brothers share a past with Katherine Pierce, whom they both knew and loved in 1864. More than a century later, their return to Mystic Falls leads them to meet Elena Gilbert, who bears a striking resemblance to Katherine.

Damon is initially portrayed as the more unpredictable and dangerous of the two Salvatore brothers. His provocative behaviour, his taste for risk and his far less restrained approach to embracing his vampiric nature contrast with Stefan’s determination to control his instincts. The relationship between the two brothers and their feelings for Elena form a significant part of the series’ plot.

Over the course of the series, Damon evolves and develops much deeper bonds with the residents of Mystic Falls. Funko describes him as a vampire who plays by his own rules, whilst using his instincts and abilities to protect those he cares about. This duality between his dangerous side and his attachment to his loved ones also explains the choice of a vampire Chase variant for this POP! No. 1975.
