Origin and backstory (Lore)

Created by Stephen Hillenburg, the SpongeBob SquarePants series follows the adventures of SpongeBob SquarePants, a particularly enthusiastic yellow sea sponge who lives in a pineapple-shaped house at the bottom of the ocean, in the town of Bikini Bottom. The series has been running since 1999 and centres many of its stories on SpongeBob’s job at the Krusty Krab, his leisure activities and his relationships with the town’s other inhabitants.

His best friend is Patrick Star, a pink starfish who lives under a rock near his house. The two share many adventures, often alongside characters such as Carlo Tentacles, Sandy Squirrel, Mr Krabs, Gary and Plankton. Nickelodeon officially presents Patrick as Bob’s best friend and neighbour.

The name ‘Bikini Bottom Buddies’ refers directly to this group of friends and characters who inhabit Bikini Bottom. This mug captures the series’ friendly spirit by featuring Bob and Patrick in a design intended to accompany everyday drinks.
