Character background and lore

Monkey D. Luffy is the main protagonist of One Piece and captain of the Straw Hat Pirates. Originally from the village of Fuchsia in the East Blue, he has dreamt since childhood of sailing the Grand Line, discovering the legendary One Piece treasure and becoming the Pirate King. His famous straw hat was given to him by Shanks the Red, with whom he made a promise to meet up again one day as a true pirate.

During his journey, Luffy gathers a crew of companions, each with their own dreams and skills. His spontaneous personality, his unwavering loyalty to his friends and his love of freedom enable him to win the trust of many allies, whilst his successive victories gradually establish him as one of the most prominent pirates of his time.

Luffy possesses a body with elastic properties thanks to the power of the Devil Fruit he ate during his childhood, and gradually develops various techniques known as Gears, as well as mastering Haki. His journey leads him to face off against some of the greatest powers in the One Piece world, eventually becoming one of the Emperors of the Sea himself, with a bounty of 3 billion berries.
