Origin and background of the symbol (Lore)

The skull wearing a straw hat depicted on the chest is the pirate flag of Monkey D. Luffy’s crew. In One Piece, the Jolly Roger serves as a crew’s emblem and represents their identity, bonds and convictions. The official One Piece website explicitly identifies this flag as that of the Straw Hat crew led by Luffy.

The hat itself holds particular significance in the story. When Luffy was still a child, Shanks the Red gave him his own straw hat before leaving Fuchsia Village. Luffy then promised to become a great pirate and to find Shanks one day. Having become his trademark, this hat ultimately gave its name to his entire crew.

Throughout his journey, Luffy gathers Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, Chopper, Robin, Franky, Brook and Jinbe around him. Together, they form the Straw Hat Crew and continue their journey through the New World towards the final island and One Piece. The symbol on this jacket therefore represents not only Luffy, but his entire crew and the adventure that unites them.
