Origin and lore

Middle-earth is the main geographical setting for *The Hobbit* and *The Lord of the Rings*, J.R.R. Tolkien’s best-known works. This imaginary world is populated by numerous peoples and cultures, including Hobbits, Elves, Dwarves and Men, and comprises regions that have become iconic, such as the Shire, Rohan, Gondor and Mordor. Tolkien attached particular importance to the geography of his world and revised numerous maps to ensure the consistency of the journeys and the chronology of his narrative.
