Origin and character lore
In Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning masterpiece, released in cinemas in 2001, Spirited Away, Boh is originally the gigantic, capricious and overprotected son of the fearsome witch Yubaba, living cloistered in a room full of cushions for fear of germs. His life is turned upside down when his mother’s twin sister, Zeniba, casts a spell on him to teach him a lesson, transforming him into a harmless little purple mouse (‘Boh Nezumi’), whilst turning Yubaba’s predatory spy into a tiny hummingbird. Forced to follow Chihiro on her journey of discovery, this makeshift little rodent goes on to discover the outside world and learn the value of hard work, friendship and independence. This Komorebi version perfectly captures the humour, the touching development and the irresistible charm of this character, who is inextricably linked to some of the film’s most beautiful scenes.
