Origin and background of the character
Created in 1974 by the Japanese company Sanrio, Kitty White (better known as Hello Kitty) is an anthropomorphic British schoolgirl depicted as a little white cat with a red ribbon on her ear. In her official biography, she is described as a Year 3 primary school pupil living in the suburbs of London. Over the decades, the character has appeared across a wide range of media and merchandise, becoming one of the world’s most successful commercial franchises. This particular version features a studious aesthetic linked to the school environment.
