Origin and character lore

Turbo Granny is one of the first major supernatural entities encountered in Dandadan, a manga created by Yukinobu Tatsu. She belongs to the yōkai category and is characterised by her exceptional speed as well as her particularly aggressive and provocative temperament.

She crosses paths with Ken Takakura, nicknamed Okarun, when he ventures into a tunnel reputed to be haunted in order to prove the existence of paranormal phenomena. This encounter triggers a series of events that profoundly upend his life and grant him supernatural abilities linked to the power of Turbo Granny.

After several confrontations, the character takes on a much smaller and more comical form, which contrasts sharply with her initial appearance. This transformation plays a major part in her popularity with fans and allows her to remain a part of the story in a more humorous guise.

Thanks to her explosive personality, her pivotal role in Okarun’s development and her instantly recognisable design, Turbo Granny has become one of the most popular and iconic creatures in the Dandadan universe.
