Step back into the SEGA Mega Drive era with this Console Heroes diorama dedicated to Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Officially licensed by SEGA, this collectable takes the form of a fold-out replica of a Mega Drive cartridge which opens to reveal a miniature scene inspired by Emerald Hill Zone, the game’s first level.

Inside are Sonic and Miles ‘Tails’ Prower, accompanied by a raised diorama featuring the lush green terrain, the bridge, the famous golden rings and a printed backdrop recreating the iconic Emerald Hill landscape. Both characters measure approximately 3.8 cm (1.5 inches): Sonic attaches directly to the scenery’s mounting points, whilst Tails is mounted on a transparent stand, allowing him to be displayed in mid-flight. The characters can be repositioned to alter the composition of the diorama.

Origin and lore

Released in 1992 on the Mega Drive, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 continues the adventures of the blue hedgehog, introducing his faithful companion Miles ‘Tails’ Prower for the first time. SEGA states that Tails can accompany Sonic on the main adventure or face him in the split-screen two-player mode. The game also introduces new mechanics, including the Spin Dash, as well as special stages that give a 3D feel.

In this adventure, Dr Eggman seeks to seize the Chaos Emeralds whilst building his ultimate weapon, the Death Egg. Sonic and Tails therefore join forces to stop him, travelling through a series of zones before their final showdown.

Emerald Hill Zone serves as the opening setting for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Its lush green hills, palm trees, bridges, loops and golden rings immediately set the game’s fast-paced and colourful atmosphere. The Console Heroes diorama accurately recreates this first stage of the adventure by bringing Sonic and Tails together in a cartridge inspired by the original Mega Drive physical media.
