Player’s background and career (Lore)
Philipp Lahm was born on 11 November 1983 in Munich. He joined Bayern Munich’s youth teams in 1995 and progressed through the academy before making his debut for the first team in the early 2000s.
Between 2003 and 2005, he was loaned to VfB Stuttgart to gain further experience at the highest level. He quickly established himself as a first-team regular there before returning to Bayern, where he gradually became one of the team’s most important players.
Capable of playing both at right-back and left-back, and occasionally in midfield, Lahm stood out for his reading of the game, his technical ability, his positioning and his consistency. His reliability earned him the nickname ‘Mr Reliable’.
Having become Bayern’s captain, he led the club to one of the greatest seasons in its history in 2012–2013. Bayern won the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal and the Champions League, completing the treble. Lahm lifted the Champions League trophy following the victory over Borussia Dortmund at Wembley on 25 May 2013.
In total, Philipp Lahm played 517 competitive matches for Bayern Munich. His honours include eight German league titles, six German Cups, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. He retired from professional football in 2017 and was subsequently inducted into the Bayern Hall of Fame.
His international career was also marked by major success. For the German national team, Lahm made 113 appearances between 2004 and 2014. As captain of the German national team at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, he lifted the trophy following a 1–0 victory over Argentina in the final at the Maracanã. He announced his retirement from international football just a few days after winning the World Cup.
This POP! Football No. 114 thus pays tribute to a player closely associated with one of the most successful periods in Bayern Munich’s recent history and with the German generation that won the World Cup in 2014.
