Victor von Doom, better known as Doctor Doom, is one of the Fantastic Four’s long-standing adversaries and one of the major characters in the Marvel universe. Originally from the fictional nation of Latveria, he combines exceptional scientific intellect with a profound knowledge of the mystical arts. Following an accident during his studies and a stay in Tibet, Victor forges a suit of armour and a metal mask that become inextricably linked to his identity as Doctor Doom. He then returns to Latveria, overthrows the ruling regime and establishes himself as the country’s ruler.
His rivalry with Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic is one of the central themes of his story. Doom regularly seeks to demonstrate his intellectual superiority over Richards, employing robotics, advanced weaponry and time travel as well as magic. His armour provides him with protection and offensive capabilities, whilst his famous Doombots allow him to deploy robotic doubles capable of deceiving his adversaries.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Doom plays a central role in *Avengers: Doomsday*. Marvel Studios has officially announced Robert Downey Jr. in the role of Doctor Doom, a character distinct from his previous role as Tony Stark / Iron Man. The film, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, is scheduled for release on 18 December 2026 and will bring together heroes from several Marvel universes.
