Origin and character lore
First introduced in 1951 in Disney Studios’ classic animated feature film *Alice in Wonderland*, the Cheshire Cat is a magical and independent creature who lives deep within the forests of an absurd world. Characterised by his unpredictable behaviour and cryptic speech peppered with philosophical paradoxes, he crosses paths on several occasions with the young, lost Alice. This feline possesses the paranormal ability to dematerialise at will, disappearing piece by piece until only his broad, sardonic smile remains floating in the air. Refusing to take sides in the conflict between the inhabitants and the tyrannical Queen of Hearts, the Cheshire Cat embodies the gentle madness, intellectual mischief and pure dreamlike quality of this timeless work of pop culture.
