Origin and background of the licence (Lore)

The Mysterious Cities of Gold is a Franco-Japanese animated series that has become iconic since it was first broadcast in the early 1980s. The story is set in the 16th century, during the Age of Discovery, and follows Esteban, a young boy nicknamed ‘the Child of the Sun’, on his journey to the New World. 

During his journey, Esteban meets Zia, a young Inca girl who, like him, possesses a mysterious solar medallion, and then Tao, heir to the people of Mu. Accompanied in particular by the parrot Pichu, the three children set off in search of the legendary Cities of Gold and gradually uncover the secrets of ancient civilisations and forgotten technologies.

The series blends adventure, history, mythology and science fiction, with settings and cultures inspired by pre-Columbian America. This combination, together with characters who have become iconic and the legendary Great Condor, has ensured that *The Mysterious Cities of Gold* retains a special place in French-speaking popular culture several decades after its original broadcast.
