Kasane Teto has a unique history within the world of virtual singers. She was collectively created by Japanese internet users in March 2008 as an April Fool’s Day prank: the character was initially presented as a supposed new VOCALOID, even though she did not have an official voice bank at the time. Her appearance, name and several elements of her profile were gradually defined by this community.
However, the prank took an unexpected turn when users decided to actually give her a voice. Vocal samples performed by Mayo Oyamano were used to create a sound bank compatible with the free UTAU software. Teto then became a genuine virtual singer and gradually built up her own community of musicians, illustrators and creators. Kasane Teto’s official website now describes her as a ‘singing character’ with various vocal libraries.
A new milestone was reached in April 2023, to mark her fifteenth anniversary, with the release of Synthesizer V AI Kasane Teto. This new voice bank utilises Synthesizer V’s voice synthesis technology and offers the character a much more fluid and natural performance whilst retaining the vocal identity developed since her early days with UTAU.
This POP UP PARADE L figure specifically depicts Kasane Teto’s Synthesizer V AI appearance, rather than her original UTAU design. It thus embodies one of the major developments in a character who began as a community joke in 2008 and, fifteen years later, has become a true icon on the international voice synthesis scene.
