Origin and character’s universe
Released in 1978 and directed by Richard Donner, the landmark feature film Superman laid the foundations for superhero mythology on the big screen. The plot begins on the doomed planet Krypton, where the brilliant scientist Jor-El — masterfully portrayed by Hollywood legend Marlon Brando — tries in vain to alert the Council to the imminent destruction of their world. Faced with the leaders’ blindness, he takes the tragic decision to save his only son, the baby Kal-El, by sending him to Earth in a space capsule. Aware of the loneliness that awaits his son, Jor-El places memory crystals in the spacecraft containing the entirety of his consciousness, his love and Kryptonian knowledge. His posthumous teachings will guide Clark Kent in the Fortress of Solitude, shaping him into humanity’s greatest protector.
