Origin and character lore
Created in 1991 by Naoto Ōshima, Yuji Naka and Hirokazu Yasuhara for Sega’s Megadrive console, Sonic the Hedgehog is an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog with the ability to run at the speed of sound. Having become the Japanese company’s official and undisputed mascot, he relentlessly battles the infamous Dr Eggman (Robotnik), a mad scientist who seeks to turn innocent animals into robots and seize the powerful Chaos Emeralds. Accompanied by his loyal allies Miles “Tails” Prower and Knuckles the Echidna, Sonic embodies a spirit of freedom, independence and justice, always ready to charge headlong into adventure whilst collecting his precious golden rings. This sleek mug celebrates the speed and cool attitude of this legendary hero.
