Character background and lore

Jude Duarte is the central heroine of Holly Black’s *The Folk of the Air* trilogy, which begins with *The Cruel Prince* and concludes with *The Queen of Nothing*. A human raised in the realm of Faerie, she grows up amongst immortal creatures who often regard humans as inferior beings.

Refusing to remain vulnerable in this dangerous environment, Jude develops significant skills in combat, strategy and political manoeuvring. Her ambition and her ability to navigate the intrigues of the Faerie court gradually lead her into the heart of the kingdom’s power struggles.

Her complex relationship with Cardan Greenbriar, prince and later ruler of Faerie, forms one of the central themes of the saga. Amidst rivalry, attraction, betrayals and alliances, their story unfolds in tandem with Jude’s political ambitions.

This POP! Books No. 68 depicts Jude in armour, an appearance that perfectly illustrates her transformation: from a vulnerable human in Faerie, she becomes a determined fighter capable of defending her place in a world where power is rarely won without a struggle.
