The history of the record player is directly linked to the earliest inventions enablingsound to be recorded and then reproduced. In 1877, Thomas Edison developed his phonograph, considered to be the first device capable of recording sound and then playing it back.
Technology then evolved towards flat discs and gramophones, gradually paving the way for turntables as we know them today. The principle remains based on the mechanical playback of a groove engraved on a rotating medium.
During the 20th century, the vinyl record became one of the main formats for distributing recorded music. The turntable then established itself as a familiar feature of living rooms and hi-fi systems, recognisable by its rotating platter, tonearm and cartridge.
Beyond its technical role, the turntable gradually acquired a distinct aesthetic identity. Models with wood finishes, mechanical knobs and transparent covers are now strongly associated with retro audio design.
The resurgence of interest in vinyl records has also transformed the turntable into a decorative and cultural object, symbolising a more tangible way of listening to and collecting music.
With this 217-piece Pop Series Turntable, Madness has reimagined this aesthetic in the form of a miniature model and added a mechanism that allows the record to actually spin, enhancing the model’s playful character.
