Rediscover the look and feel of the first personal computers with this 1984 Desktop Computer from Pantasy, part of the Retro Collection. Comprising 895 pieces, this build-it-yourself model recreates a compact computer typical of the mid-1980s, complete with its built-in screen, external keyboard and wired mouse. The number of pieces is also clearly stated on the set’s official packaging.
The model features a predominantly light grey finish and reproduces many details characteristic of computers from that era. The screen displays a monochrome graphical interface comprising windows, drawing tools and pixelated icons, whilst the keyboard features each key and its label individually. A mouse connected to the computer completes the set.
Pantasy has also gone to great lengths to reproduce the technical details: the model features a front-facing drive into which a component representing a floppy disk can be inserted, as well as a detailed rear panel with various connectors, ventilation grilles and removable parts. Once assembled, the model serves primarily as a decorative piece for a desk, a shelf or a collection dedicated to retro technology.
The mid-1980s marked a significant milestone in the democratisation of the personal computer. Machines began to gradually move away from text-only interfaces in favour of graphical interfaces using windows, icons and a mouse – principles that would later become standard in consumer computing.
With its monochrome screen, all-in-one casing, floppy disc drive, separate keyboard and mouse, Pantasy’s Desktop Computer 1984 deliberately draws on these historical design elements without seeking to replicate a modern computer. The Retro Collection thus transforms an iconic object from the early days of personal computing into a model intended for exhibition.
