Character background and universe (Lore)

Monkey D. Luffy is the main protagonist of One Piece, a manga created by Eiichiro Oda. As captain of the Straw Hat crew, he sails the Grand Line with a goal as simple as it is ambitious: to find the legendary treasure known as One Piece and become the Pirate King.

Recognisable by his famous straw hat, his boundless optimism and his almost insatiable appetite, Luffy stands out above all for his unwavering determination to protect his friends and pursue his freedom. His adventure gradually leads him to face off against some of the world’s most formidable pirates, marines and powers.

Having gained his powers as a child by eating a mysterious Devil Fruit, Luffy develops a spectacular fighting style based on his body’s extraordinary abilities. As his journey unfolds, he hones his techniques, masters various forms of Haki and gradually reveals the full extent of his capabilities.

At once unpredictable, courageous and deeply loyal, Luffy has become one of the most iconic characters in Japanese manga and animation, perfectly embodying the central themes of One Piece: adventure, freedom, friendship and the pursuit of one’s dreams.
