Origin and character background (Lore)

Monchhichi is a Japanese creation launched by Sekiguchi in 1974. The original concept combines a plush body with a face, hands and feet made of soft vinyl, with the character’s signature pose – where it holds its thumb to its mouth – as its defining feature. It was an instant hit in Japan, and international exports began as early as 1975.

Over the decades, Monchhichi has become a true icon of the toy industry and kawaii culture. The range has expanded to include numerous sizes, outfits and themed variations, and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024. According to the official website, over 70 million have been sold in more than 30 countries since its creation.

Bearchhichi continues this tradition of reinterpreting the character. This version gives it a little bear’s fur, whilst retaining Monchhichi’s instantly recognisable identity.
