Origin and character lore
In Hayao Miyazaki’s eponymous masterpiece released in 1988, My Neighbour Totoro, the Grey Totoro — whose real name is ‘Ō-Totoro’ — is an ancient magical creature and the spiritual guardian of the forest who watches over the surrounding natural world. Over 1,300 years old, this benevolent and peaceful spirit spends most of his days sleeping in the heart of a gigantic camphor tree. His path crosses that of the young sisters Satsuki and Mei, who have just moved to the countryside. Although he communicates only through deep, resonant roars, he shows them immense kindness, offering them magical seeds and coming to their rescue aboard the Catbus in times of trouble. Having become the official emblem of Studio Ghibli, Totoro single-handedly embodies nostalgia for childhood, respect for nature and the power of the imagination.
